Tenor Anthony Kearns Kicks off Memorial Day Parade

06.07.13

The renowned Irish Tenor Anthony Kearns opened the 2013 National Memorial Day Parade Program, which took place in Washington, D.C. a little less than two weeks ago. While it may seem erroneous to have an Irish singer open for an innately American holiday, the executive director at the American Veterans Center, Tim Holbert dispelled any doubts, stating, “As one of the most acclaimed tenors currently performing, Anthony Kearns is a perfect fit to open the 2013 National Memorial Day Parade’s telecast.”

Kearns sang a resounding rendition of “America the Beautiful,” with a 260-member chorus in front of an estimated crowd of 300,000 people to mark the 70th anniversary of World War II, the 60th anniversary of the Korean War, and the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War.

One of the founding members of the highly acclaimed Irish Tenors and an enthusiastic supporter of charitable causes including the USO’s Operation Enduring Care, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, Thanks USA and others, Kearns observed, “It’s my privilege to sing America the Beautiful to honor those who have fallen in defense of this great nation.”

The President and CEO of The Coalition, David Walker, was delighted to have Kearns play such an integral role in the Parade stating, “We appreciate Anthony’s work on behalf of all Wounded Veterans — and we were very fortunate to have him on our program.”

Earlier this year, Kearns performed at a ceremony in tribute to Medal of Honor recipients as the guest of General Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. As the guest of the Speaker of the House, John Boehner, Kearns performed for the 2013 Friends of Ireland Lunch, where he received a standing ovation led by President Barack Obama. In Fall 2012, he was a featured guest on the PBS Special, “America’s Veteran’s: A Musical Tribute,” with the U.S. Air Force Band.

Kearns has received substantial critical praise throughout his career for his seemingly effortless vocal abilities, impressive range and control, and his finely tuned showmanship. A video of his Memorial Day performance is available on YouTube and it is certainly well worth the 2 minutes and 12 seconds of your time.
