Stephen Chan was Foundation Dean at SOAS University of London, where he holds the Chair in World Politics. A former international civil servant, he helped pioneer election observation in Zimbabwe in 1980 and has written extensively in 35 books about Southern Africa, as well as world philosophical and religious issues. He has also published 5 volumes of poetry and 3 novels. Professor Chan, the son of Chinese refugees to New Zealand in WW2, now lives in London and continues to be seconded to several high level diplomatic missions and exercises at both Track 1 and Track 2 levels. He was awarded the OBE in 2010 and has recently held the Konrad Adenauer Chair at Bir Zeit University in Palestine, and the George Soros Chair at the Central European University in Budapest.
