Modern war does not merely kill people—it poisons ecosystems, fuels climate change, and leaves civilian suffering that can endure for generations.

Countries wage war in the name of security, sovereignty, and power. Yet the weapons they unleash routinely endanger the future they claim to defend. Perhaps governments fail to grasp the full consequences. More likely, they understand them but regard environmental destruction as an acceptable cost. Either way, modern warfare does not end at the battlefield. Its damage travels through the air, seeps into soil and water, destroys ecosystems, and outlives the political disputes that caused it.

War has always devastated societies. Medieval armies killed soldiers and civilians, displaced communities, ruined crops, and spread hunger and disease. Modern weapons have not replaced those cruelties; they have industrialized them.

Missiles, drones, heavy artillery, and precision-guided bombs can strike from great distances and at extraordinary speed, while explosive weapons used in populated areas can kill civilians on a vast scale. Technological sophistication has made war more efficient, but not necessarily more discriminating or humane.

The victims extend far beyond those killed or wounded in combat. When hospitals are damaged, fuel runs out, electricity fails, and medical supply chains collapse, people with chronic illnesses lose access to treatment. Pregnant women and infants face greater danger. Ports, farms, water systems, and power plants may be blockaded or destroyed, leaving entire populations vulnerable to hunger, contaminated water, and preventable disease. A missile does not need to hit a civilian directly to shorten that person’s life.

War’s environmental costs begin even before the shooting. Modern militaries are among the world’s largest institutional consumers of fossil fuels, powering aircraft, naval fleets, armored vehicles, overseas bases, and sprawling supply chains.

One widely cited estimate attributes roughly 5.5 percent of global greenhouse-gas emissions to military activity. Yet military emissions remain poorly measured and are often inadequately disclosed, allowing a major source of carbon pollution to escape the scrutiny applied to civilian industries.

Once conflict begins, the damage multiplies. Bombardment can ignite oil facilities and industrial sites, releasing toxic smoke and chemicals. Explosives and heavy metals contaminate soil and groundwater. Land mines render farmland and wildlife habitat dangerous for decades. Forests are cleared for military purposes or stripped for fuel by displaced populations. Conflict also weakens environmental enforcement, enabling illegal logging, mining, and poaching. In some war-affected regions, populations of large animals have fallen catastrophically. The ecological casualties may never appear on an official list, but they are casualties all the same.

The effects persist long after ceasefires are signed. Oil spills, unexploded ordnance, chemical residues, and pulverized building materials can make neighborhoods unsafe to inhabit and land difficult to cultivate. Rebuilding destroyed cities requires enormous quantities of steel, cement, and energy, producing another wave of emissions. The carbon cost of war therefore includes not only military operations and fires, but the reconstruction made necessary by destruction.

Human displacement deepens the crisis. By the end of 2023, an estimated 117.3 million people worldwide had been forcibly displaced, a figure that rose above 120 million in 2024. Refugees and internally displaced people often endure overcrowded camps, unsafe water, food shortages, limited healthcare, and heightened exposure to exploitation and sexual violence. Host communities, meanwhile, may struggle with strained services, economic pressure, and the difficult work of social integration.

The psychological damage also crosses borders. People living through bombardment, bereavement, displacement, and deprivation face sharply elevated risks of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress. Soldiers, aid workers, and host communities carry their own burdens. Even people far from the fighting can experience helplessness and distress as images of destruction arrive continuously on their screens. These harms should not be equated, but together they demonstrate how thoroughly modern conflict penetrates civilian life.

War and climate change also reinforce one another. Armed conflict accelerates emissions, pollution, deforestation, infrastructure loss, and resource depletion. Climate change, in turn, can intensify food insecurity, water scarcity, displacement, and competition over land and livelihoods. It rarely causes war on its own, but it can magnify existing political failures and social tensions. Violence damages the climate; a destabilized climate can then make future violence more likely.

Recent strikes on energy infrastructure have made this cycle visible. During the conflict involving Israel, Iran, and the United States, attacks on oil facilities near Tehran sent thick black smoke over the capital, prompting concern about toxic fallout and the long-term consequences for public health and the environment. Such attacks demand serious legal scrutiny. International humanitarian law does not impose a blanket ban on striking energy infrastructure, but it does require distinction, proportionality, and precautions to protect civilians. An attack may be unlawful when expected civilian and environmental harm is excessive in relation to the concrete and direct military advantage anticipated.

The laws of war recognize that environmental protection is inseparable from human survival. Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions prohibits methods or means of warfare expected to cause widespread, long-term, and severe damage to the natural environment. It also protects objects indispensable to civilian survival, including drinking-water installations, food supplies, crops, and agricultural areas. The Rome Statute likewise identifies certain intentionally launched attacks causing clearly excessive, widespread, long-term, and severe environmental damage as war crimes in international armed conflict. Chemical and biological weapons are separately prohibited under international law.

These rules matter more as water stress grows. The International Committee of the Red Cross has repeatedly warned that attacks on water infrastructure can produce devastating humanitarian consequences. In a world moving toward greater water scarcity, dams, pumping stations, treatment plants, and reservoirs may become both strategic assets and instruments of coercion. Treating them carelessly—or deliberately weaponizing access to them—can condemn civilians to disease, displacement, and death without a single shot being fired at them.

The environmental legacy of war has many faces: poisoned air, ruined farmland, displaced families, collapsing wildlife populations, deep psychological trauma, and a warmer, less stable planet. Hiroshima and Nagasaki remain the most terrifying reminders that the effects of weapons can endure across generations, but the same principle applies more broadly. The means of warfare shape the world left behind.

Governments cannot continue treating environmental destruction as a secondary consequence to be assessed after the fighting stops. Military emissions must be measured honestly. Environmental risks must be incorporated into targeting decisions, weapons reviews, reconstruction plans, and negotiations over accountability. International humanitarian law already supplies important restraints; what remains chronically absent is enforcement and political will. A state that destroys the conditions necessary for life cannot plausibly claim that it has secured the future.
